Life doesn’t always leave much room for relaxation which means one of my favorite pasttimes gets the back burner: reading. However, this past weekend brought sunshine and two days of fairly empty schedules which meant that I could FINALLY finish a book that I have been reading ever since it was given to me for my birthday (in January).
A passion for food? Check. A love for gardening? Yes. An interest in where food comes from? For sure.
Barbara Kingsolver and her family decide to eat locally for one year, which means no bananas shipped from South America, no fruit during the winter, no avocados shipped from California, no processed food created from who knows what…and it is fascinating. She talks about organics, the truth behind what we think is true organic food; she discusses facts about world hunger and family farms; she sheds light on heirlooms, the real seasons for various produce, and what varieties to grow; and she even gives tips on what to do with all that extra zucchini (perfect for my family). It is a great read and I highly recommend it…plus, it comes with recipes!
